If you can’t resist the allure of an SUV, the Lexus ES stands out as an affordable option. It scores a 7.0 out of 10 on the TCC scale for its impressive combination of refinement, efficiency and fuel economy in hybrid form. (Learn more about how we rate cars.)

After last year’s major update, the ES 2023 comes with some good news: the new center console removes the touchpad controls and replaces the platform with an 8-inch touchscreen. 0 inch standard or optional 12.3 inch device.

This traditional, full-size sedan shares a lot with the outgoing Toyota Camry and Toyota Avalon, but comes with a much more expensive lesson. It is Lexus’ most popular passenger car, but it trails the RX crossover SUV in the sales race.

With its strong lines, the ES gives off an almost sporty look. Inside, it is light, with a clean silhouette and minimal details. Decked out in light tones, soft leather and real wood accents, the ES can be very elegant.

Regardless of the drivetrain, all versions of the ES drive smoothly, which emphasizes control and the absorbing effect of sports movements. Base models include the 302-horsepower V-6-powered ES 350 with front-wheel drive or the 203-horsepower ES 250 four-cylinder with four-wheel drive. The key option here is the ES 300h hybrid, which delivers 214 hp and 44 mpg, which means it can go 15 kilometers more per gallon than its siblings.

Inside, the ES has plenty of room for four or five adults. What’s left out is the lack of folding rear seats, which would help sell RX crossovers. All models are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

On the safety front, the ES received excellent crash tests and a host of collision avoidance technologies, including automatic emergency braking, active lane control, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

This year, the Lexus ES 2023 starts at $42,490 in ES 250 AWD or ES 350 trims. The hybrid costs $1,200 more.

We’ll spend that on the hybrid and the luxury variant, which adds leather seats and a few other small details. Add an option or two and you’ve got $50,000.

Lexus Es Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, And Photos

The Lexus ES 2023 is as impressive on the outside as it is on the inside. We scored one point for both the exterior and the passenger compartment, so we gave 7 points on the TCC scale.

The lower front carries one of the cleanest interpretations of the Lexus ‘spindle’ badge today, though it’s surrounded by an unusual chrome beard. The less is more theme continues on the side, where the ES has a lower, sinewy and less aggressive stance. Compared to the rear, it is aggressive, thanks to the wide light strip covered with a light strip.

Inside, the two-level dashboard is covered by a 12.3-inch touchscreen in most settings. (An 8.0-inch display is standard, but you’ll want a bigger screen.) Small buttons and switches are located at the bottom. A nod to the past: a side-mounted CD player under the center stack.

It can. All-wheel drive is standard on the ES 250, but not on the ES 350 or ES 300h.

Lexus Rx First Drive Review: Boring No More

The ES 250 has the lowest gear in the chassis and uses a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. We haven’t driven the model yet, though it should offer mild power for a 3,800-pound all-wheel-drive sedan. Lexus claims a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds with this powertrain.

The next ES 300h changes things up with a hybrid system that combines a single electric motor and nickel-metal hydride battery with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine for a total of 215 horsepower. This combination also means a wider torque curve, which helps the ES 300h perform decently; it’s faster than the base version, with a 0-60 mph time of 8.1 seconds. It grumbles at times, and we’re not big fans of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), as it tends to keep the engine running hard at high revs to deliver power. However, for most users, this is the best train here – especially fuel efficient.

At the top of the line – at least in terms of performance – is the ES 350, its 302-horsepower V-6 offers a regular growl, accompanied by a slight rumble. This is a very refined engine here and works well with the 8 speed automatic transmission. 0-60 mph is 6.6 seconds.

Most models have a smooth ride, good damping and a reasonably weighted handle. Front-wheel drive models can be equipped with the F Sport Handling Package, adaptive dampers, Sport+ and Custom driving modes, all of which provide a responsive and engaging feel. The top-of-the-range Ultra Luxury shocks are equipped with the same high-performance shocks for even better ride quality and less body roll in tight corners. There’s no hiding the weight of this model on bumpy roads, but as long as you don’t live in a Southern California canyon, the ES is perfectly suited for everyday driving.

Lexus Es Price And Features: Genesis G70, Audi A4 And Mercedes Benz C Class Rival Scores Key Upgrades

Calm, quiet and elegant, the Lexus ES has good cabin space for the money. It’s an 8 on our scale thanks to its good four-passenger capacity, comfortable front seats and good trim.

The ES tops out at 196 inches, which makes for great interior space. Power front seats fit many body types without being sporty. Five adults can fit in, although the third row is too narrow for three adults. Oddly, the second-row seatbacks don’t fold down, so you’ll have to pay extra when you buy them if you’re carrying larger items.

Faux leather is standard, while soft genuine leather is on the options list. Additional luxury details include perforated wood, heated and cooled front seats, and unique upholstery. The two-tone cabins can be confusing at first, but the careful attention to detail makes them a fun place to dive for miles.

A top choice with top scores from NHTSA and IIHS, combined with excellent crash avoidance technology and good visibility. The Lexus ES 2023 scored a 9 on the TCC scale.

The NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall, while the IIHS ranks it as the best safety feature when equipped with LED headlights.

Standard fare includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, active lane control, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control. Surround camera systems and parking sensors are widely available.

Lexus offers a variety of configurations for the 2023 Lexus ES. Even well-equipped base models start at $42,490 – the same price as an ES 350 or ES 250.

Good basic features, large touchscreen and attractive warranty, 8 out of 10.

Lexus Es — Luxury Midsize Sedan

Base models feature a synthetic leather interior, an 8-inch touchscreen, power front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels. The $2,430 Premium package appears to be a gimmick for heated and cooled front seats with driver memory, a wireless charging dock, wood trim and rear cross-traffic alert, among a few other niceties.

Starting at $47,660, the luxury ES version has more premium package features and genuine leather upholstery. Add another $1,030 for the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and the final price is still under $50,000.

Ditch the F Sport Design trim for the Ultra Luxury trim and you’ll want to shell out the better part of Lexus’ $52,000, though these well-equipped models compete with full-size sedans for features.

The ES 350 is the most popular model and is rated at 22 mpg city, 32 highway, 26 combined. This is not bad in terms of power, but the hybrid is more economical.

However, we rate cars based on the most popular versions, so the ES scores just 3/10 for fuel economy.

The Hybrid averages 43/44/44 mpg in EPA tests, which would be good for 6 points on our scale.

Lexus Es 2023 Review

Along with the flagship LS sedan, the mid-size ES helped launch the Lexus brand more than 30 years ago. The car has changed a lot since then, but seven generations later it’s still closely related to the Toyota Camry and Avalon. Like the original, the Lexus ES 2023 prioritizes comfort over sportiness.
