The new RX is the same length as the outgoing model. However, the long wheelbase, wide body and lowered roofline create a powerful appearance.

A 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the standard powertrain. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes in both front- and all-wheel drive.

Estimated power is 275 hp and 317 lb.-ft. in speech. Expect around 22 mpg combined with FWD or 21 mpg combined for AWD models.

The spindle grille is still large and dominates the design, but the chrome perforations around it blend in well with the rest of the dashboard.

All RXs feature the standard Lexus Safety System Plus 3.0, automatic high-beam roll, lane assist and dynamic radar cruise control.

The petrol RX 350 is also available with the F Sport Handling upgrade. This package improves the brakes and suspension and upgrades from the standard 19-inch wheels to 21-inches.

With a memorable name, the RX 2023 is also the top model in the line. Officially named the 2023 Lexus RX500h F Sport Performance AWD, the mouthpiece of this luxury SUV is not only a strong blend of luxury and sport, but also the most powerful RX you can buy. It also happens to be a hybrid and sits atop the RX line of four models. For the new RX 2023, one of the top numbers in its name is good, if you can understand what Lexus is going for.

The translation is simple. The RX350h is practical, the RX450h+ is electric (plug-in hybrid) and the RX500h is sporty. That’s one of the reasons the RX500h is only sold as an F Sport Performance model. Any operation is more of a pleasant byproduct than a concept.

We’ve never seen the Toyota-Lexus 2.4-liter turbo I-4 in a hybrid powertrain. On its own, the engine produces the same 275 horsepower as the standard RX350. Add a version and motor to the rear axle for a total of 366 horse power. Unlike other RX hybrids, the RX500h has a mode-specific AWD system called Direct4, which can distribute front-to-rear torque in milliseconds in a split that varies from 70/30% front/rear to 20/80. We hope to fully test this system in the only way we can, but at this point, we know that one benefit of the system (perhaps when driving at a normal speed) is the way the automaker says it should be.

This catches our attention, as body control was the issue we saw on the Lexus NX, a small SUV using the same platform. Unlike the RX350h, which uses a CVT, and the RX350, which uses an eight-speed automatic, the RX500h sticks with a six-speed automatic to save weight and size, Lexus says. The transmission worked well on the RX500h. Despite the name F Sport Performance, we will never forget that this is the first RX luxury SUV. This is not a Supra-SUV.

At least on the smooth roads we drove the RX500h on, there’s a racing suspension in normal drive mode, showing that the Lexus is more of a luxury sports car than a canyon carver. We’ve seen some steering feel from the standard RX350, but the RX500h is still fun and drivable thanks to its powerful electric power, the sound of the engine pumping through the cabin, and the powerful rear-wheel drive.

Rear steering technology on the RX500h version means that the rear wheels can tilt up to four degrees parallel or opposite to the front wheels, depending on speed. For example, on the road, when turning at city speed, the back can turn to face the front, making the SUV feel a little slower. When I drove multiple RXs on the same roads on the same day, I noticed subtle, subtle differences in the steering response. This is not the first time Lexus has offered this equipment, and it is also available on competitors like Mercedes and Genesis. Either way, the RX500h version looks great and, unlike Direct4 systems, is something owners will appreciate most of the time. However, what we need in the future is a rotation of more than four degrees to further improve the experience.

Accelerating to 60 mph in a claimed 5.9 seconds isn’t that fast these days, but it’s the fastest-feeling 2023 RX available today. And in most situations, the RX500h offers more than the driver needs in every situation. What makes this model special is the way it does all this while delivering around 27/28 mpg city/highway fuel economy. This is good considering all the performance and features included in the RX500h, especially when compared to the 21/28 number RX350 AWD. Yes, the 246hp RX350h hybrid comes in at 37/34mpg and has a long drive, but this model offers more vibration through the pedals than the RX500h.

With the RX500h’s near-natural brakes, you won’t even care that it’s a hybrid. When paired with the RX350, appreciate the added power without sacrificing fuel economy. If you want more fun in a mid-size luxury SUV without going full RS, AMG or M, try the RX500h. It’s bringing another twist to the brand’s “spindle” grille design. The face of the 2023 RX is an interesting change of the polarizing Lexus appearance that is found in the interior of the line with a high level of body color. Whatever you think of the new design, the new RX is set to round out the luxury SUV spectrum with new powertrains including a plug-in hybrid model and a 367hp RX500h F Sport Performance hybrid variant. Rumor has it that Lexus will release a new three-row crossover called the TX in the near future, so we don’t think the old “L” RX models will be making a comeback this time. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine used in the RX350 and RX450h was replaced by a variety of single-cylinder engines, including natural gas engines and three different hybrids, before disappearing. The RX350 has a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four with 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. As in the NX350, this engine is available with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. The RX350h uses a standard Toyota hybrid configuration, combining a 2.5-liter inline-four naturally aspirated and an electric motor to produce 246hp. All-wheel drive comes standard and will put out around 33 mpg combined, which is 3 mpg better than the previous RX450h’s V-6 hybrid setup.

Things get interesting with the new RX500h F Sport Performance model. Considered to be on the same level as the V-8 powered IS500, this RX has a new hybrid system with a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four gasoline engine instead of the Planet and a six-speed automatic. Gearset is standard for Toyota’s hybrid powertrain. It produces a total of 367 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and Lexus says its all-wheel drive, called Direct4, connects the electric motor to the rear axle for improved handling.

There is also an RX450h+ model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Lexus did not provide specifics, however
