Fuel economy is up 2 mpg overall compared to the V-6 model, with expected EPA ratings of 22/29 mpg city/highway with FWD and 21/28 with AWD. Lexus estimates the sprint to 60 mph will take 7.2 seconds with AWD and 7.5 seconds with FWD, and that makes the new RX 350 about half a second slower than the 2022 model.
On the open road, the RX350’s four-cylinder is mostly in the background, which is where it belongs. Lexus smartly shuts down the engine because the RX is a luxury SUV, even in F Sport guise. Well, it could also be because the engine doesn’t sing like the turbo I-4 in the smaller Acura RDX. As for the RX350, I didn’t detect any significant turbo lag, and the idle experience didn’t raise any eyebrows. (Some motors make too much noise or vibration after starting.)
The only fault we encountered with the RX350’s engine was the way it sounded at moderate to full throttle: a little rough for our ears. But that’s not where RX350 owners will spend most of their time. It’s a cruiser first, though ironically, after sampling every 2023 RX, I detected the most steering feel in the RX 350. The RX’s eight-speed automatic is responsive and light, but then again, anyone’s guess for something more sporty it would be better to buy something else. After that, the RX350 F Sport has a touch of firmness to its ride, but it’s never uncomfortable.
Interior quality and luxury are a big part of the Lexus RX’s appeal, and we can definitely see the latter. The test SUV Lexus provided was a pre-production prototype and didn’t represent the quality of the models you’ll see on dealer lots, but the attention to detail is still there. Almost every surface on the interior doors and sides of the center console looks great or feels soft. We’ve spent time in the 2023 RX models in the trim range, and even the lower model has enough design and luxury feel to make it worthy of the L badge.

That said, we’d recommend an upgrade from the standard and Premium models to increase the infotainment system from a 9.8-inch touchscreen to a 14.0-inch one, which is available on the 2023 RX Premium+, Luxury, and F trims Sports Handling. . It’s just a good daily experience. Note that these two screens do double duty with on-screen navigation and audio information as well as HVAC controls. Suddenly, 9.8 inches doesn’t go as far as you’d think, especially if you prefer a split-screen experience with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. While the infotainment screen is a real improvement for RX buyers, the digital instrument cluster remains a work in progress. An all-digital screen isn’t available, but a 7.0-inch display is standard on every model. We’ll take it in lower trims, but we’d like to see Lexus integrate an all-digital display option, which is increasingly available in the industry. As it is, the RX display does the job, but it can be a bit cluttered with information at times. More isn’t always better, but in this case it certainly is.
Part of what makes the RX so appealing is its convenient mid-size package. That hasn’t changed with the 2023 RX350, which has roomier rear seats and a cargo area that can swallow more stuff than ever before. However, the bloat that so plagues this industry is nowhere to be found. The updated RX 350 is a rare vehicle that gives you room to stretch out without feeling like you have to hold your breath as you cautiously pull into a parking spot. Although the new RX’s wheelbase has been extended, Lexus has managed to keep its overall length exactly the same. So you still won’t feel as much command from the wheel of a BMW X5, but the competitor’s back seat isn’t as spacious as you might think. Still, as it was, the BMW starts at over 60 grand, which brings us back to the RX 350.
No, the 2023 RX350’s performance isn’t exceptional, but then again, it’s not. Instead, it’s about offering Lexus luxury with modern technology in a good-sized SUV. And yes, there’s room for improvement, but the 2023 RX350 is a vehicle that continues to highlight RX’s well-established reputation as a solid combination of luxury, value and space – one that we’re sure will continue to resonate.
