With the hardest name to remember, the RX 2023 is also the best model in its lineup. Officially called the 2023 Lexus RX500h F Sport Performance AWD, this delicious SUV is the most powerful RX you can buy, as well as a solid blend of luxury and sportiness. We’ve never seen a Toyota-Lexus 2.4-liter turbo I-4 in a hybrid powertrain before. The engine itself has the same 275 horsepower as the regular RX350. Add converters and motors to the rear axle and you’re looking at a combined 366 horsepower. Unlike other RX hybrids, the RX500h has a model-specific AWD system called Direct4, which can split the torque front-rear in milliseconds, varying between 70/30 front/aft and 20/80. We hope to thoroughly test the system in just one way, but in the meantime, know that another benefit of the system — perhaps when driving at higher speeds — is that the automaker says it reduces body movement.
This caught our attention because we’ve seen body control issues in the Lexus NX, a small SUV running on the same platform. Unlike the RX350h, which uses a CVT and gets an eight-speed automatic, the RX500h works with a six-speed automatic to keep weight and dimensions under control, says Lexus. The transmission works well in the RX500h, even with the F Sport Performance name never forgetting that this is an RX luxury SUV – not a Supra-SUV fan.

At least on the smooth roads we drove the RX500h in standard drive mode, there’s a softness to the suspension that suggests that Lexus has opted for a more upscale sports model over focused canyon carvers. We found more steering feel on the standard RX350, but the RX500h is a bit more fun and maneuverable thanks to its massive powerplant, cab-mounted synthetic engine noise, and dynamic rear steering.
On the RX500h version of Rear Steering Technology this means that the rear wheel can turn up to 4 degrees in the same direction as the front wheel, or in the opposite direction depending on speed. For example, turning onto the highway at city speeds, and the rear can turn the opposite way to make the SUV feel a little more agile. After driving a few different RX’s on the same day and on the same road, we detected a slight and positive difference to the previous steering system. This is not the first time that Lexus has borrowed this technology from rivals such as Mercedes and Genesis. Either way, the RX500h version is cool, and unlike the Direct4 system, it’s something owners appreciate more often. To further improve the experience, we’d like to rotate it more than 4 degrees in the future.
The claimed 5.9-second sprint to 60 mph isn’t particularly fast these days, but it is the fastest RX 2023 on offer today. And for the most part, the RX500h delivers what a driver needs for any situation. What makes this model special is that it does all of this while still offering 27/28 mpg city/highway. That’s pretty good, especially when you consider all the power and features the RX500h has compared to the RX350’s 21/28 AWD figure. Yes, the 246-hp RX350h Hybrid comes in at 37/34 mpg and has a longer range, but this model transmits more vibrations through the pedals than the RX500h.
With the RX500h’s almost natural braking feel, you don’t even have to realize it’s a hybrid. Value the extra power without sacrificing fuel economy when paired with the RX350. If you want more excitement than a mid-size luxury SUV without driving an RS, AMG or a full M, try the RX500h.
